What is UML?

UML, or Unified Modeling Language, is a standardized language for creating and describing system models. UML is mainly used in areas where systems are complex, for example in software development and to describe business processes. UML contains a number of different types of diagrams, each with a specific purpose. The most common diagram types are activity diagrams, class diagrams and user case diagrams. Activity diagrams are used to describe how different activities interact and influence each other. Class diagrams are used to describe the class structure of a system and user case diagrams are used to describe users' interactions with the system. Compared to similar technologies, UML is a very flexible and user-friendly technology. UML is a standardized language, which makes it easier to communicate ideas between different parties. UML is also a very visual technique, which makes it easier to understand and interpret diagrams.
