What is System Architecture?

System architecture is the knowledge and skills required to plan, design, and implement systems with performance, security, cost, and deployment considerations in mind. System architecture is a broad competence that includes everything from hardware architecture to software architecture, network and storage. A system architect should be able to analyze and interpret complex system requirements, and translate them into a robust and scalable system architecture. System architecture also means understanding and managing different types of system anomalies, and being able to choose the right tools and techniques to solve them. System architecture can be compared to other competencies such as hardware architecture, software architecture, network architecture and storage architecture. However, system architecture is broader and more abstract than these other competencies, and focuses on creating holistic system solutions.
